Intelligent species, at least in the realm of Aisling, refers to the possession of sapience and self-awareness in a living creature. In other words, the ability to act with judgment (i.e., know right from wrong) and the understanding that one exists.
Intelligent species in the Aisling universe can plan, experience emotions, develop cultures, have their own languages, etc.
